meiersafe.com: four design directions
Each prototype has the same pages and the same words, taken from the 2015 paper, the 2018 Gulfstream talk and the 2021 article, and not yet edited. Only the look differs. Open each one on your phone and your computer, and try printing a page.
D · Briefing, quieter New Oct 3
B's boxes and numbered sections, with A's easier reading text and smaller, lighter headings. Notes move to the margin on wide screens. Built from Mike's comments.
A · Reference
Quiet and typographic, like a well-made journal. Notes sit in the margin on wide screens.
B · Briefing
Strong headings, boxes and numbered sections. Built to print as a handout for a safety stand-down.
C · Narrative
Story first: a dark, full-width opening, large type and big quotes. Room for flight photos and slides.
New: the whole reading path
- Twelve pages instead of three. Start on the home page and follow "Next in the reading order" at the bottom of each page: the framework, Factors I to III, the remedy, the case studies, hard questions, luck and uncertainty, and the full paper.
- From the Gulfstream talk: the 2015 certification launch as a second case study, the poster and the crow on a "Hard questions" page, and more on the pressure to go. Each is marked in blue so you can keep or cut it.
- Briefing Kit: a sketch of where the discussion questions would be collected.
- Yellow notes are Steve's drafts or questions for you. Dashed boxes are where photos, slides and video would go.
Changed on October 3, in all four designs
- Home page: a short "What this site is" introduction and the reading order, following the paper.
- Try the numbers: wider boxes that fit 99.999 and more, and small results shown properly (0.018%, not 0.0%).
- The 1995 top landing: a "Read first" link to the warning signs in Murphy's Corollary, and Mike's correction to the background.
What to look at
- The flow: read straight through from the home page. Does it build the way the paper does? What's in the wrong place?
- The framework page: the whole argument in order, on one page. It asks you which order the factors should go in.
- The case studies page and the Briefing Kit: how the cases, the factors and the discussion questions fit together.
Pick one, or mix them ("A's text with C's home page"). Any reaction helps: what you like, what feels wrong, what's missing.
Prototypes only. Pages not built yet are marked "page not built yet". The diagrams are schematic and drawn from the paper's description; your slides and photos come later.
